The Mission
Urban Voices Radio exists to provide a safe, supportive, and structured broadcast training environment where people can learn radio, audio production, and media skills through hands-on participation. We use radio as a practical learning tool — not just to broadcast, but to build confidence, technical ability, communication skills, and creative voice within our communities.
The Story
Urban Voices Radio was created in response to the lack of accessible, real-world media training opportunities for people who are often excluded from traditional broadcasting routes. We believe that media should be something people can take part in — not something controlled by gatekeepers — and that learning by doing, with the right support, is the most powerful way to grow skills and confidence.
The Vision
Our vision is to develop Urban Voices Radio into a recognised community broadcast training platform, supporting new voices, future broadcasters, and creative talent across the North East and Cumbria. As Urban Voices Community Media Ltd. grows, our radio platform will continue to evolve as a space for learning, experimentation, and high-quality community-led broadcasting.

We believe everyone deserves meaningful access to media skills and creative opportunities, regardless of background or prior experience. Our Resources
Supported by a mix of online and community-based resources, Urban Voices Radio is designed to make broadcast training accessible to a wide range of participants. Alongside professional broadcast equipment, Urban Voices Radio operates within community spaces through our Urban Voices Community Cafés and our Urban Voices PopUps initiatives — informal, welcoming spaces where communities can engage with media, creativity, and learning without barriers. These environments complement our online Academy and training, offering flexible entry points into media skills development and learning.

As one of the practical training arms of Urban Voices Academy, Urban Voices Radio combines live broadcast experience with structured learning, mentoring, and creative development. Participants don’t just learn about radio — they learn through it! Features are designed to support confidence, creativity, and responsibility, ensuring participants develop technical ability, communication skills, and professional awareness while contributing meaningfully to community broadcasting across the North East & Cumbria.
